Diverticulitis Management — The "Lavage" Debate
The surgical treatment of Acute Diverticulitis has reached a consensus in 2026. While the traditional "Hartmann’s Procedure" (which results in a temporary stoma) is still used for life-threatening perforations, most cases are now managed with Laparoscopic Lavage or "Primary Anastomosis with Diversion."
Lavage involves washing out the infection through small incisions without removing the bowel, allowing the inflammation to settle so a definitive, planned surgery can be done later. This shift represents the 2026 philosophy of "Damage Control Surgery," prioritizing the stabilization of the patient and the avoidance of a stoma whenever safely possible.
